The key to Photo-Catalytic Oxidation is the photo catalyst, a chemical compound that becomes highly reactive when exposed to various wavelengths of ultraviolet light. In the presence of organic pollutants - such as solvents, alcohols, carbon monoxide, dyes, and fuel oil - the activated photo catalyst attacks the pollutants' chemical bonds, converting the toxic compounds into benign constituents such as water and carbon dioxide.

A unique feature to the zIVF AIRe air cleaner is the use of ultraviolet light to destroy microorganisms in the air.  Located inside the unit is an ultraviolet lamp producing 10,000 times the intensity of normal sunlight.

Ozone (O3) is an allotrope form of oxygen that has three atoms in the molecules as opposed to the usual two in ordinary oxygen. It is an unstable, color-less to pale-blue gas with a penetrating pungent odor. Ozone is toxic. Ozone smell can be detected in very low concentration of 0.02 ppm; and in concentration 250 to 500 times greater (5-10 ppm) in inhaled air ozone irritates eyes and air passages. Ozone is essential to life on earth because it absorbs the harmful wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In nature ozone occurs naturally in greatest concentration in the ozonosphere in the upper atmosphere at an altitude of 15 to 30 kilometers (9 to 18 miles). It is also produced among others by silent electrical discharge in air or by lightning, or by the cathode discharge method, which is passing air or oxygen through electrical arcing between two metal plates of high voltage or by passing air or oxygen through a field of short wave UVC ultraviolet light.
